If you are searching for "Renfrew Ottawa," let me clear up the geography first. Renfrew is a town in the Ottawa Valley, outside the City of Ottawa. You can reach Ottawa by road, but you should judge a home here on what daily life in Renfrew will look like, not on an Ottawa neighbourhood commute.

Renfrew is worth a look if you want an established town, a detached home within reach of your budget, and a main street that still feels like a main street. The trade-off is the drive. If you need to be in downtown Ottawa five days a week, test that trip before you fall in love with a listing.

Where Renfrew is and what it feels like

Renfrew sits on the Bonnechere River in Renfrew County. The town grew through the lumber industry, and you can still see older buildings along Raglan Street and homes on the surrounding streets. The town's history page explains some of the places you will pass on a walk downtown.

Start a visit on Raglan Street. Walk a few blocks, then drive the residential streets and the commercial area around O'Brien Road. A Renfrew walking tour on YouTube gives you a preview of the downtown streetscape, but a video cannot tell you how a street feels at school drop-off or after dark. Visit at the times you expect to be out and about.

Renfrew by the numbers

The 2021 Census profile for the Town of Renfrew counted 8,190 residents and 3,954 occupied private dwellings. The median age was 54. Of the occupied homes, 62.2% were single-detached. Those figures describe the town as a whole, not any one street or school catchment.

The census shows why detached homes matter in a Renfrew search, but the town also has row homes and apartments. Search by property type and condition before anchoring on the monthly average price.

A lower purchase price can feel different once you add the cost of getting to work.

Schools for families

The town's school directory lists Central, Queen Elizabeth, and Admaston public schools, along with Renfrew Collegiate Intermediate School and Renfrew Collegiate Institute. Catholic options listed include Our Lady of Fatima, St. Thomas the Apostle, Valleycrest Renfrew, and St. Joseph's Catholic High School.

Do not assume the closest school is the one assigned to an address. Check the current boundary, grade range, program, and transportation eligibility with the relevant school board before you make an offer. Those details can change and can matter more than a ranking.

Parks, trails and a day outside

Ma-te-Way Park belongs on a first visit if recreation matters to your family. The town parks directory lists ball diamonds, a track, soccer field, tennis and pickleball courts, a fitness trail, play areas, and the myFM Centre there. O'Brien Park sits beside the Bonnechere River, McDougall Mill Museum, and the Swinging Bridge. McConnell Park has a natural trail and a small creek crossing.

That gives you several different ways to use a free afternoon. It also makes a useful house-hunting test: drive from a listing to the park or facility you expect to use every week, rather than judging distance on a map alone.

Shopping and everyday errands

Raglan Street is the historic downtown shopping corridor. The town also has commercial services around O'Brien Road. Make an ordinary errand list before deciding whether Renfrew is a fit: groceries, pharmacy, daycare, sports, healthcare, and anything you need after business hours. Walk the main street, then check the drive from the specific house you are considering.

The Ottawa commute and transit

Renfrew has a road connection to Ottawa, but it is not an OC Transpo neighbourhood. The town's getting here page lists Ontario Northland bus service and advises checking its schedule. I would not plan a daily downtown commute around a bus without confirming the current timetable, stops, and return trip.

A July 2026 discussion in r/ottawa is useful for the questions it raises, not as a travel-time guarantee. One commenter who said they commute from Renfrew to Kanata North reported a trip just under an hour when leaving at 6 a.m. Others discussed winter delays, fuel, and vehicle wear. Your destination and hours may change the answer substantially. Try the drive on a weekday at your own start and finish times, and repeat it in poor weather if the commute is central to your decision.
